At the <strong>Bidibidi Refugee Settlement<\/strong> in Northwest Uganda, the<strong> SUNNY project <\/strong>is implementing innovative renewable energy solutions to address these pressing challenges and explore their impact across the <strong>Water-Energy-Food (WEF) nexus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Home to <strong>270,000 displaced persons<\/strong>\u2014primarily fleeing civil war in South Sudan\u2014<strong>Bidibidi <\/strong>is one of the largest refugee settlements in the world. With no access to the national electric grid, both refugees and the surrounding host communities rely heavily on expensive, unreliable, and environmentally harmful energy sources. Through collaboration with partners <strong>UMAK, META, SOLHYD, AKO, and SOLEK<\/strong>, SUNNY is bringing sustainable solutions that integrate energy, food security, and agricultural productivity to unlock a brighter future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">The Energy and Development Context in Bidibidi<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its establishment in 2016, Bidibidi has faced significant challenges in meeting its energy needs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Limited Energy Access:<\/strong> Refugees and local host communities rely on costly fuel-powered generators, biomass, and small solar systems for basic needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Impact on Healthcare and Education:<\/strong> Health centers and schools struggle with inadequate power.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Food Insecurity:<\/strong> The region&#8217;s dependence on subsistence farming and limited irrigation systems makes agriculture vulnerable to weather variability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Environmental and Economic Strains:<\/strong> Heavy reliance on biomass leads to deforestation, while expensive fuel for generators burdens local businesses and households.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>SUNNY&#8217;s approach combines <strong>biogas<\/strong>, <strong>hydrogen cooking<\/strong>, <strong>cold storage<\/strong>, and <strong>smart solar irrigation<\/strong> to address these challenges.
